The fastest computer in the world – Cray XT5 — aka ‘Jaguar’
The most powerful computer (to be called as a supercomputer) in the world is Cray XT5, simply called as the “Jaguar”. It’s a monster computer that has the ability to clock 1.759 petaflops, i.e., 1759 trillion calculations per second. Unimaginable isn’t it.
It is built using AMD six-core Istanbul Opteron chips with a clock speed of 2.6 GHz each. In total, it holds 255,584 processing cores. It was upgraded from an existing super computer that was running at half the speed of Jaguar with four-core AMD processors. The Jaguar holds a system memory of 362 terabytes (three times that of the second largest system in the world).the read/write speed of jaguar is 384GBps
IBM’s “Roadrunner” holds the runner-up position in this category.
