Cellular communication in flight may become a reality soon

18 February 2010 State Commission for Radio Frequencies (SCRF) is planning to consider the possibility of using cell phones on board passenger aircraft during flight.

The mere fact of such review and, moreover, the positive solution of this issue is for us ordinary users of GSM, a number of significant advantages. We left feeling isolated during the flight, can make calls and surf the Internet.

What pitfalls may arise in the case of permits mobile during the flight?
For this we must clarify how it will work. In fact, everything is simple: install the equipment in the aircraft, which on the one hand represents a femtosecond (picosecond)-cell site GSM-service inside the cabin, on the other side communicates with the GSM-bandwidth satellite, which, in turn, down to earth "for its ground equipment GSM-network.

This simple from the logical point of view, the scheme would entail additional costs and air carriers, and cellular operators. First, the plane can be set only certified equipment - it costs money. Secondly, the traffic "aircraft - the satellite operator - operator GSM" should also be paid. Naturally, as you know, all costs will be recouped from our pockets. Maybe carriers will be included in the ticket price "GSM-component" for equipped aircraft. You may have to pay extra on board for the opportunity to use mobile communication. Besides, with us, probably, cellular operators will take the extra money for "satellite roaming" (you can call it as you like, but the essence remains the same). In general, all actors will try to compensate for the costs at our expense.

Should not be afraid - because the price level is not yet known. You simply have to understand that "free lunch" for mobile communications on board the plane most likely will not.

According to Itar-Tass, the major cellular operators have responded differently to the forthcoming discussion. Quote
